African American "natural" hair HELP!!?

Published by admin under African American Wig

Okay guys follow me…. 5 months back I was taking a sew in hairstyle out of my head. It was so tangled I just said forget it and I cut off ALL MY HAIR! lol

Since then I have not put ANY Chemicals in my hair… I have been wearing lace front wigs (without gluing them on) when i leave the house.. and I let my hair out in the house and at night.

Now my hair has grown about 3 inches and that’s pretty fast for my hair… I think its becasue of not getting any relaxers!

So now, I don’t know rather I should get a perm, or keep going natural…
The only problem I have with going natural is the texture. My hair is really dry… what could i use on it to make it more moist?

what do you guys think? what should I do? what could I use?

also.. i heard that there was a "natural" hair chart to see what was your natral hair type… true?

There are many hair charts over the Internet, but most of them are derivatives of Andre Walker’s (Oprah’s stylist) hair chart. The thing about relaxers is that it can constantly break off your hair because the chemicals weaken it. This constant breakage is what keeps most black women from achieving long hair lengths (mid-back and waist-length). Your hair hasn’t grown faster, its that you don’t have a relaxer that keeps it weak and breaking off. So, by being natural you’ve been able to hold onto more growth than you normally would.

Most blacks on the hair chart are a 4a or 4b. There are always exceptions, but most blacks fall within that range. If you want longer, healthier hair then you should stay natural. If you don’t mind thin shorter hair that’s constantly breaking off then start relaxing. It’s up to you. There really isn’t a "natural" hair chart that I’ve seen. The general hair chart includes all hair types (straight, wavy, curly, kinky curly/kinky). 4a has coils that are pencil to coffee stirrer sized, and they can be wiry to the touch. 4b does not have a curl pattern, but instead the strands form a z-pattern.

For moisture I usually add a moisturizer and seal with a natural oil like olive oil. Besides a moisturizer, you can also leave-in a smalll amount of conditioner, or if your hair is very dry you can leave in a small amount of deep conditioner and then seal with a natural oil. There are many natural oils to choose from, so find something that’s good for your hair. You might find that your natural hair and relaxed hair need different products to stay healthy. Another thing you can do to infuse moisture in your hair is to baggy. Use a natural oil, moisturizer, conditioner, or deep conditioner and put it in your hair at night. Put one of those clear plastic conditioning caps over your hair and then put your regular hair scarf over it for added heat. When you wake up in the morning your hair will be wet or soggy. Experiment with different oils, moisturizers, or conditioners. I tried all three types and found that olive oil works for me. Do this consistently for a while and you’ll notice that your hair begins to retain more moisture. I had to baggy every day for two weeks before my hair began to retain moisture, so don’t expect results overnight. You should also deep condition once a week, and if your hair is extremely dry then you can do it twice a week. Sometimes I deep condition mine about 2Xs a week. Some people use S-curl activator on their hair. I’ve only used Hawaiian Silky cream activator and that worked well on my hair last summer. I don’t know anything about S-curl though, but you can ask other naturals.

Also, keep in mind that relaxers can affect your hair for a long while *after* you stop relaxing. So, if you’ve been relaxed for several years then you might not even be looking at your real hair texture. It can definitely change over the next few months. If it’s brittle, extremely dry, semi-straight or hard to curl, rough, and just nasty looking then it will most likely change. That change can happen over the course of a few months or a couple of years. My hair is changing at a slow pace, but my coils have gotten smoother, easier to curl, retains more moisture, and the coils have gotten much looser from when I first cut my hair. It’s still changing over a year after my last relaxer.

My advice is to visit as many hair websites, message boards, and hair journals as you can so you can learn how to take care of your natural hair and what to expect of it. Good luck.

You can search youtube for many videos. Many naturals have hair journals at fotki.com

African American Hair?

Published by admin under African American Wig

i have a black friend and she says that it is alot of work to take care of her hair, so she wears a wig/weave on top of it. questions….1. is it really that difficult? 2. is it possible to style black hair without it looking greasy? 3. Why can’t you wash it everyday? 4. Is everyones naturally curly?
I’m not racist, she is my best friend!! I just never knew what it involved to take care of this type of hair. simple question. don’t freak out and call ppl racist who arent k?

im african and no it isnt all that difficult to manage (cuz i manage mine). it all depends on what ur trying to do with it. if your trying to gel it up to make it all flat … yea thats not guna happen lol. with our highly textured hair its best to use natural styles like braids, twists, etc. and also straightening works magic too :) and yes, black hairs stylable without a greasy look. mousse works pretty gud without making the hair look greasy. and our kind of hair is the dryest, so washing it every day strips our hair of the natural oils our scalp produces, leaving it even drier. and people with lower textured hair’s natural oils are able to slide down the hair shaft better than highly textured hair, so thats why it appears greasy and you have to wash it often. and what do u mean by is everyones naturally curly? im not sure lol but i hoped i helped anyway ;-]

For all my African American Sisters: I need help with wigs…?

Published by admin under African American Wig

Can anyone elaborate on lace front wigs?
Band cap?
Drawstring?
Clips?

I’m wanting to buy a few wigs but have never own one. I just want something that I can pull over my head, fluff with my fingers and a brush if necessary and go. I DO NOT WANT TO CORNROW MY HAIR OR GLUE ANYTHING IN IT. Any suggestions? Please!

Lace-fronts are a lot of work. Not a grab-n-go type deal.

To me, the best wig alternative is what’s called the half-wig. It’s basically a wig that will cover all of your hair except for a rim of hair around your crown. You bun up almost all of your hair except for a 1/2 inch or so section around the head, then with the built-in comb you place the wig onto your head. Then you brush your natural hair over the front of the wig. With the rim of natural hair around the wig, you have the freedom to pony or bun your hair without anyone seeing that it’s a wig.

It’s a very easy to use, effective way of wearing a wig. I’ve enjoyed my half-wig. All you need to do is ensure that you buy a wig that is within 1-2 shades of your natural color and try to match your natural texture.

Good luck!

What can i do to make my hair grow faster if im a african american?

Published by admin under African American Wig

i’ve had many struggles when it comes to my hair, perms damaged my hair i’ve had to bascially start over soo many times.. recently my hair fell out to about a inch long now its about 3-4 inches long and i wear a wig now.. i want my hair to grow out before i go back to college.. im 16 are there any people who know what types of shampoo and conditioner i should use that works for african americans if so please explain below thank you

First of all, stop doing chemical treatments to your hair. This includes relaxers, coloring, etc. (for now until your hair is healthy again). Wash the hair on a regular basis (water is your friend! it provides moisture) and be sure to deep condition afterward. Follow up with a leave in conditioner, and apply it daily until the next time you wash your hair. "seal" in the moisture by applying a small coat of oil (olive oil, coconut oil, or anything else you prefer) on top of the leave in conditioner. Following a healthy diet rich in B12 and folic acid. Drink a lot of water, and be sure to eat all those veggies!
Also look into:
*Protein treatments
*Healthy & safe relaxing for when you finally can chemically treat your hair again (http://www.ehow.com/how_5528842_achieve-healthy-relaxed-hair.html)

I think I’m going gothic for halloween..I’m a honey caramel toned african american and need make-up help.?

Published by admin under African American Wig

I think that I am going as a gothic spider queen. I am planning on black skinny leg jeans, black tank, black patent peep toe high heel booties or pumps such as http://www.dsw.com/dsw_shoes/catalog/product.jsp?index=40&sort=&category=dsw12cat520016&prodId=188117&brand=

a black bob wig with a bang. Long eyelashes. I am not sure about makeup. I thought about MAC looking with thick eyeshadow. I don’t want jet black eyeshadow. Any suggestions about the look?

That sounds great for a Halloween costume by the way. Um.. for your skin tone maybe you should apply makeup of a bright, metallic tone to stand out, with long fake eyelashes. Black eyeshadow would not show, plus so many people will probably have the same shadow.

Definitely go for a metallic colour.

As seen here in the step-by step video tutorial…

I’m thinking of getting an anime wig but I’m african american and I kinda wanna get something that mixes up. I wanna get something from death note or other anime any suggestions

here’s what i look like

From death note, I’d go with the deep espresso color and down in your eyes a bit.
Btw, I think your hair looks nice the way it is, but I understand you want to mix things up, its fun!
I think if you keep it short, and just dress more like anime characters you like it would give a stronger affect than just the wig.
Sorry, I don’t know much about anime at all or I’m sure I could come up with a better sug.
Actually my reason for liking your hair the way it is, I’ve written an action story entitled "The Blood Society" in which one of my main characters looks (or at least how I picture him) just like you!

Half a wig and detangle question?

Published by admin under African American Wig

I have been letting my hair just grow while I wear a half a wig. I do wash my hair daily and find that it has been curling up and getting tangled. I do not want to comb the hair straight and wear it that way under the wig becasue i do not want to break it what de-tangeling tecniques or products can i use on my african-american hair to stop this?

There’s a great detangling product called Simply Stylin’ that you might want to try. It’s made of pure silicone and is very light weight. My hair is pretty kinky, and I put it in after I shampoo. After that, my hair is just silky smooth and soft. They give out free samples so you might want to check them out. simplystylinhair.com.
